Does Fasting for Weight Loss Work?

Fasting for weight loss is a fad that comes in and out of style, almost entirely because as soon as people realize that it works they also realize what a toll it takes on their body. Cultures all around the world have used fasting as a means to cleanse the body, spirit, and the soul, but they weren’t using it for weight loss. Once the fast was over, they had a feast to replenish the lost nutrients.

If you are trying to lose a small amount of weight very quickly, then fasting for weight loss is a viable option, but certainly not one that should be done very often. There are many side effects that come along with fasting that are not desirable, and if you have any other health issues at all, then you should not be fasting.

The reason why fasting for weight loss does work in the short term is simply a matter of math. For a short period of time, you are consuming far fewer calories than you are using, and your body starts to burn fat instead of what would normally be food. The weight loss that happens during this period of time, though, is usually water weight loss as a result of lack of nutrition during the fast. It isn’t until the fast is well into several days before a person starts to actually begin to burn fat.

If you choose to fast for religions or cultural reasons, then that is one thing, but if you are doing so in order to lose a few pounds so you can fit into that new dress, then it really isn’t a good idea. A short-term diet is not the way to long-term weight loss and it is better to just eat right and exercise in moderation over a longer period of time.
